Online Learning

In today's society, online learning class is increasing because of nowaday technology involved with almost everything in human life. Online learning is another option for an educational program. Online learning in Virginia K-12 is going to be increasing because of online education powered by K12 means, your student can go to school wherever there's an internet connection. In fact, the K12-powered virtual school in Virginia offers a choice beyond traditional brick-and-mortar schooling, but both share some common characteristics. Like a brick-and-mortar public school, a K12-powered online education in Virginia follows the traditional academic calendar, state-licensed teachers provide instruction, and counselors and school staff are on hand to offer help. And, just like a traditional public school, all of this is tuition-free.

Some parents choose online learning. For example, Virginia Virtual Academy (VAVA) for their children because the program is very flexible. They feel that their children get an overall better education through the program that the local public schools. One of the most reasons that they chose to enroll their kids is a safety issue. The program allows them the ability to school in a different location and lets the parents be more" hand-on" when it comes to their children's education. For the staff, they are also said that staff has almost always been easy to reach and helpful. I think this is one of the reasons why they chose online school learning for their children.

Inquiry and Primary Sources

I was introduced to inquiry-based learning and primary sources when I was an ESL student at Columbia College about the constitution. Before then,  I never know about a primary or secondary resource was. When I was in high school, I was introduced to primary sources at the museum by going to field trips with all of my friends in school but at that time I don't even know what is the point of going to a field trip with school. Until I watched the video about how the difference between a primary source and secondary sources.

As a future teacher, I would introduce my kindergarten students to the primary source of the American flag in the past between 1865-1867. and the present of the American flag. I would use inquiry-construct https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wptvnpr-gFU&feature=youtu.be I would show students a picture of the past American flag and the present one and let them compare between both flags. In the activity, students will learn about an important national symbol: the American flag. Students will analyze an image of an American flag from the post-Civil War era (1865-7) and compare its details (i.e., the stars and stripes) to those of our nation’s flag today. After completing the activity, students will be able to identify the American flag as a national symbol, analyze details of this symbol,l compare two different versions of the American flag.

In conclusion, I experienced some inquire -based leaning when the teacher encouraged us to make observations, ask questions on what we were doing, reflect, and evaluate. I think having a powerful primary source with a hands-on activity where students can understanding the content easily and enjoy the class lesson.

Digitally-Manipulated Image

    Digitally-Manipulated Image

The image that I created would work well with kindergarten students as my standard relates to demonstrating growth in the representation of oral language skills. Kindergarten students are the age of starting to develop oral language skills phonological awareness, print awareness, vocabulary, comprehension, and an appreciation for literature. This image engaging and supporting my learning standard SOL, K.2  d) Use words to describe/name location, size, color, and shape because seeing a picture of Peppa family in the car look at a STOP sign can explain all of the standards that I focus on the picture. In addition, I also want students to create and think about what can happen and ask them what are they seeing in the picture and make their own story by looking at the picture by using "Think aloud" strategy.

Students will look at the image hypothetical situation in the picture and students will be able to analyze, describe and remembering location, color, shape, size. For example, in the picture is Peppa pig’s family is driving a car and see a STOP sign, in the STOP sign, has red color, octagon shape, big size, and word STOP meaning stop a car and also the car is on the road, the location is the road. This image is an example of the substitution level of the SAMR model.

UDL concept map

Universal Design for Learning: Chapter 4

Chapter 4 in Universal Design for Leaning primarily dealt with the three principles of UDL:

    - Multiple means of engagement (Why of learning)

    - Multiple means of representation ( What of learning)
    - Multiple means of action and expression ( How of learning)

In my opinion, the " Inspiration program" is an incredible tool for teachers to use for creat and plan the lesson for students. There are so many features that I can choose to fit with in different content to the classroom. I would love for my students to learn and use this program, as I think it would be a valuable way to increase comprehension skills and help them organize their work project information. I believe that the concept map will help the most of visual learner and it will make them understand the lesson easier because it is very easy and enjoyable to use.

The standard I choose

The standard of learning that I want to focus on this semester is English, Kindergarten, K2
I look through the Virginia Department of Education SOLs website and I found the important educational start to young students as Kindergarten is to identify story elements, and communicate ideas through pictures and writing by this standard follow.

K.2 The student will expand understanding and use of word meanings.

 a) Increase listening and speaking vocabularies.

 b) Use the number of words.

 c) Use words to describe/name people, places, and things.

 d) Use words to describe/name location, size, color, and shape.

 e) Use words to describe/name actions.

 f) Ask about words not understood.

 g) Use vocabulary from other content areas.

I chose this standard because of Kindergarten students is the age of starting to develop oral language skills phonological awareness, print awareness, vocabulary, comprehension, and an appreciation for literature. Students will be able to learn to read, remember, analyze and describe the content. The kindergarten students will start to lean in different content such as remembering the alphabet, animals, shape, etc. I am hoping that this standard can be the starting trail of educating young students and help me developing their skills in the classroom.
